Renegade Priest of the Northern Cheyenne

Renegade Priest of the Northern Cheyenne by Renee Sansom Flood tells of Father Emmett’s family background, early childhood on a Wisconsin dairy farm, his mischievous seminary years and his 1954 post to St. Labre Mission in Montana. Many obstacles stood in the way of Father’s vow to educate Cheyenne and Crow children. Throughout this biography, Father Emmett’s human qualities, his weaknesses, strengths, mistakes and successes illuminate life as a priest at a remote Indian mission.

Father Emmett’s humanitarian achievements on behalf of the Northern Cheyenne is unequaled in the history of the Catholic Church in the 20th century American West. But success came with a terrible price. Father Emmett Hoffmann’s remarkable accomplishments finally overcame the moral violence leveled against him by religious brethren, but not before it nearly cost him his life.
